I think I figured out how it happened, as I got the forum to glitch with a couple of test groups that I made for Alaska. I'm going to do a few more tests...

Proton mail just banned my email which I exclusively use for this site, for a while I thought ZV got shut down, but I eventually found a workaround. Just a PSA that it might be a good idea to whitelist a different service because they could literally ban the entire user base.
 
I have been inactive with my Protonmail but now and then every time I log in, I see unread messages I haven't opened

If Protonmail account is deleted, you can still log in here. I haven't checked my Proton account in 2 years, it might have been deleted a long time ago.

This has some security implications though. So I keep mine alive.
If the same mail can be re-registered, you might be able to steal an account here.

I hope Protonmail is smarter than that. For at least 10 years, I haven't seen an email service provider that didn't assign a separate ID to the same email address, thereby preventing such crappy account theft opportunities.
 
Just logged into protonmail, seems to be working fine on my end.
So I better remind me then to log in every now and then

Actually we do allow multiple emails services to be used on the forum. Although I think the only place where we mention it is upon registration.

We did this awhile back because for a time ProtonMail was either banning/locking accounts when you created an email and the first email sent to your inbox was a registration email. They did this because they don't want their emails to be treated like "throw away" emails. If you waited 5 days after creating the email, you could avoid this issue, but for obvious reasons that wasn't ideal. I also believe they also delete your account if you don't login for 1-2 years for the same reason.

I don't think they do the former anymore, but we did add 3 additional email clients about 7-8 months ago.

There is a notice about that.
"From April 9, 2025 they deservecthe right to delete all data associated of Proton Free if inactive for one year.

Accounts created begore niw, noll have two grace years, until April 2026"
 
i keep getting a red dot on my little bell, but when i click to see, there is nothing new. it keeps reappearing and disappearing as i switch between pages and whatnot... kinda weird??

It is a bug, open notifications and click mark all read.

I had an account on here that had been confirmed and had been in use for quite a long time. I had many posts and private messages and was gaining rank on the forum.

Very recently I went to reopen a thread on here (yes I had left myself logged in, lecture me later on that please). I was greeted with a message at the top of my screen telling me that a confrontation email had been sent to the email address I had registered with, and my ZF account had lost all functionality as though it was an unconfirmed account now.

I thought this was a little odd, but still didn't think too much about it. I thought maybe the admins were doing some new security thing and reconfirming accounts somehow or maybe it was indeed just a bug. I figured I'd just sign back into my protonmail account and click whatever confirmation email had been sent to re-verify my ZF account and it would all be good.

Here's where it really becomes a problem. I didn't realize protonmail was deleting accounts after periods of inactivity and found myself locked out of my email.

Now. No access to confirmation email which leads to no access to my ZF account (an account which had been confirmed and in use for a long time btw) which in turn, left me no way to contact or message the admins about the bug or for support.

This literally left me no other option but to try and register a brand new account. Of course this did not occur without its own hiccups with the attempts to get a new account so I could contact the admins for help resulting in bans for "multiple account".

So... admins... please explain why an existing account that had already been confirmed and used for a long time would suddenly need a confirmation email again?

Also, please explain what else I could have done to get help or contact an admin for assistance.

-Also, please explain what else I could have done to get help or contact an admin for assistance- You could just contact @FloofyNewfie to assist you... I log in occasionally into Protonmail but haven't experienced any issues, although that upgrading notifications which I ignore.

😞 I couldn’t contact @FloofyNewfie because randomly and suddenly my account was being treated as an unverified account and unverified account don’t have the ability to send messages or make posts. Thefore I had lost any ability to use my account’s normal features to reach out for help and find out what had happened. I was still able to login, but I essentially had no functionality to my account. Of course, I still can’t contact Floofy because I’m having to start all over again and new accounts can’t send messages until they’ve made at least 10 posts. So I had to go through the nightmare of setting up a new account and earning my rank all over again just to be able to contact the admin for assistance and alert him to the bug I encountered with my old account.

It sucks.

Perhaps, someone would be gracious enough to see my post and point this one out to @FloofyNewfie on my behalf so I can discuss it with him and try to understand how this happened? I want my old account back.

I also got the message that ZV tried to contact my proton email, but that everything bounced. Consequence: I couldn't access the forum. I decided to create a new email at proton, changed the email address here, verified it, and everything works again.

The old account was “slutcalhoon”

It shows as banned now under the “multiple accounts” rule. I didn’t want a new account, but this was really the only option I had left to contact the admins. The old account was letting me log in and read all of my private messages but it had lost all functionality and wanted to go through the verification email thing again which was impossible because I’d lost that email address due to inactivity. I’d love to have my old account back and fixed and delete the one I’m on now.

Unbanning the account is easy enough, however I can't change the email associated with it.

😢 So it seems that building my membership back up with the new account is my only choice, because I can’t get access to that proton email anymore. I’d made some connections on the old account with some really nice members. Sucks. That’s all I can say.

Any ideas why the account glitched was treating it like an unverified account, and making me do the whole confirmation email thing again though? Unbanning won’t do me any good if it’s still trying to make me reverify the account and won’t let me change the email myself. Seems like that shouldn’t have happened and definitely seems like a bug worth looking into.

I guess this is a painful reminder to make sure I log into my email once in a while to keep it active. Hopefully someone else comes across this post and learns from it also so that it doesn’t happen them.

Btw. Thank you sincerely for replying to me here. Even if this can’t be fixed and my old account is lost forever, it’s still nice to know I wasn’t ignored and received some acknowledgment from the staff here. I know y’all have your hands full on this site with a lot of posts and threads to screen through daily and I’m sure some of you probably have jobs and lives outside of the forum also. So….thank you. I really mean that.

You should be able to log into your old account, click on your icon up at the top of the forum, click on "Account Details", and next to your email should be a little box that says "Change." Once you click on that, it'll ask for a new email address and to confirm your current password. From there it should send a verification email to your new email. Login to your new email and confirm the change by clicking on the link. That should unlock your account and change your email to one that's valid.

I’ll give it another try again later after I get home. I just hope it doesn’t result in getting the new account flagged under the multiple accounts rule and banned until I’m certain I’ve regained functionality on the old account.

If successful, can you remove the new account I’m posting from or ban it please @FloofNewfie? I won’t need it anymore if I can get things corrected with my old account. Thank you again for all the help. I’d still like to know what caused the old account to need a new confirmation email suddenly after it was 5 years old.

Y’all have been more than helpful and patient with me in my time of assistance and temporary breaking of the multiple account rule. With your assistance and guidance I was able to fix my old account and regain full function as you can see from this post. Maybe I’m just a little dumb and missed the change email part the first time. 🤷🏻 Everything seems to be good now though. 😃🎉

Do what you need to with that other account and ban it or remove it. Maybe better to ban it (since I don’t think you typically remove accounts anyway) and leave the posts up in case anyone else has the same problem and can learn from it to avoid the same mess as me.
