Swinging back and forth like Tarzan, ey?
It's based on cost-efficiency-balance.
As long as to actually use "grid"-related power is possible, via grey-areas with low prices and helping on establishing more and more own off-grid resources for usage without having to do everything by muscle power only (like Amish villages would do it, but together - while animals could hardly help me), it's a fine way to use it. For like.. 1/60th the "establishment costs" of a house attached to the grid, while the consumed power amount still costs quite a lot (but if you don't need it, you don't have a lot of basic costs).
Not to forget that I am involved in companies, which means that there is no possibility to live 24/7/365,25 without unfortunately having to play an established business role under humans. Even as I would prefer it, but there comes no good result out of leaving important development-related tasks to other people most of the time.
Sounds like my situation.8 kw solar complex (roofs). The power company takes care of the excess production and we get free electricity in return when the sun is not shining, most likely from a hydro power plant.
That's a cool thing. In DE there's unfortunately very low price paid for injecting own solar power into the grid, while taken power out of the grid costs 7 to 12 times more. No matter "when". That makes it quite unfair.
As such I am more for having the ability to save some amount myself, share with potential neighbors if necessary or "burn" the exceeding energy by establishing climate controlled areas. And if the photovoltaic collector energy amount is too low, I can take some out of the grid. Or alternatively: don't and use my alternative ways of establishing off-grid energy usage. ?
It was me imagining something that was not "you", when thinking about your living conditions. The "no heat" aided in me seeing something rather basic.
Yea, the buildings are merely better sheds right now for my own standards. For American standards they might be quite fine houses.
But at the end it's not critical to replace something which "works" as long as the surrounding tasks are not done.
If they're done and profitable outcomes of the started business concept gather, I'll just sell one of the both and place an own construction with modern material in the same place, which can be heated to a comfortable 10 (being off-site) to 24°C round the year by less than 500 kWh yearly energy consumption.
I prefer a big house with top notch modern equipment, but I also love to decorate, having many rooms allows for more of such hobbies.
Ah, I would as well. But the seven-digit company- and product-related investments don't come out of nothing, my good demonfloof.
As such there's always two ways to do things: begin to save and improve your life slowly. Or live with what you can acquire and invest the financial aspects such that they might break-through into a self-sustaining permanent (long term) income which doesn't actually require you to do more than to design a few new ideas and maybe - if you want to - develop them yourself. Whenever you want to.
That's my goal, not to slowly save to some better life (which I do parallel, but less in terms of "saving" than in terms of "investing into material which allows me to actually build the goals slowly").
I'm a lazy fox. And life's short. As such it is a good thing if in 2-3 years I don't need to move a finger and still can finance three Tesla's (why would I? They are shitty concepts, shitty designs and permanent surveillance of their users.. nah, thank you, there are better concepts out there, even faster ones, as well electric) per month. ?
And as long as this isn't a given, I'll just enjoy a poor, but very interesting, very diverse life in terms of projects, tasks, work..
