Zoo mother in law!!

I'm glad it turned out well, but please do NOT get intimate (beyond talking) with her behind your wife's back. I think that should be obvious, and I'm shocked so many here are recommending it.

This is a valid point to bring up, at this progression point of the social situation. Eventually the wife will have to be told.

See few replies above, him and the mum spoke about it now... all good and happy. Sounds like he’s got a great setup, mum in law for zoo stuff, wife for sex stuff. He’s lucky x

Don't know if that's what you meant, but "eventually" telling your wife that you've been intimate with her mom... to call it a bad idea would be an understatement.

Talking with your mother in law about sex is okay, but already flirting, sexting or sharing porn (especially of each other) crosses the line.

Also, you must not out your MIL if you ever talk to your wife about zoo. This is for her to disclose if she feels like it.

I think it would be best for that to be kept hidden unless she explicitly stated that it can be shared. Privacy regarding sexual matters is more important than sharing the details with the community.

Yeah, when online dating was starting, I did that to someone. She had absolutely no idea how much information she was giving out about herself -- from her dating profile, she mentioned a website she was active on, which led me to her personal website, the domain for which was registered to her home address. I warned her about it but didn't try to meet her -- I got the feeling she felt a little creeped out by it. Funny, she lived about half a mile away from me.

Really cannot emphasize this too much. In the old days before digital photography, ALL the photo lab techs had libraries of nudes and sex photos that people had had processed. Nowadays it's the computer repair people -- and they turn their customers in when they find illegal content on someone's computer.

The MIL really did luck out that her daughter gave it to OP to fix instead of taking it to BestBuy or someplace similar. I hope the encryption package is a good one without any backdoors, like TrueCrypt 7.1a (the last version before some national government tracked down the developers and tried to pressure them into corrupting the program, at which point they shut down development). It's been audited and found mostly secure, just some very minor nitpicking in the audit results.

Are there any foreign encryption programs that the government can't pressure? I hear the EU does have some merit to it when it comes to issues regarding privacy.

Although it was presumed to be the NSA that tracked the devs down, I am not aware of any public disclosure of where the devs were located. I always assumed they were in Europe, since most encryption software development was going on outside of the U.S., thanks to the Phil Zimmerman situation and the whole "cryptography is munitions" position of the U.S. government.

In any case, TrueCrypt still works, as does PGP/GPG. I personally don't feel much trust for VeraCrypt because it's closed-source, and of course Microsoft's built-in stuff is almost guaranteed to be backdoored (in case anyone missed hearing about the "NSAKEY" scandal, look it up, Microsoft accidentally leaked an unstripped binary of an OS build and there were storage locations for two keys for their encryption system, one of which was named NSAKEY. Hmm, what could that *possibly* mean, gee, I dunno. . . .), but both are probably ok for anything outside of a serious government investigation -- it's not like the NSA is going to reveal that they can look at encrypted data just to imprison someone for dog sex. Then again, there's always parallel construction to try to pretend they somehow managed to crack the drive instead.

I usually recommend TrueCrypt to people because you're not encrypting individual files with it -- you're creating a complete filesystem within a file (or, optionally, on an entire disk partition) which gets mounted as a filesystem, and then you can store anything you want within that. To all three major operating systems, it looks just like any other disk. Eventually it may no longer work with the newest versions of some OSes, but AFAIK at present it still works fine. There are occasional problems with corrupted file containers, though; you do have to ensure that disk caches get flushed before shutting it down, EVERY SINGLE TIME you use it.
