I mean pointing out the erroneous misnomer of American's use of football is trite. What really seemed to annoy any frat bro that I got in that argument with is to offhandedly assert that their football was just a worse version of our rugby:

You’re not wrong honestly. Never really cared for watching either sport so much as playing them. And I do still enjoy a good pick up game of our American soccer.

I can’t speak to the west coast, but around here rugby is quickly becoming more popular.
