The Difference Between Atheism, Theism, and Agnosticism
Many people think "agnostic" is a middle ground between "theist" and "atheist."
But it's not. These terms answer
different questions.
- Theism vs. Atheism: Do you believe in God (or gods)?
- Gnosticism vs. Agnosticism: Do you claim to know for certain?
This gives us
four possible combinations:
- Agnostic Atheist:
I don't believe any god exists, but I don't claim certainty. I could be wrong.
- Gnostic Atheist:
I don't believe any god exists, and I claim to know they don't.
- Agnostic Theist:
I believe God exists, but I'm not sure. I could be wrong.
- Gnostic Theist:
I believe God exists, and I claim to know for sure.
Key Point:
Agnosticism is not halfway between theism and atheism.
It's a position about knowledge, not belief.
It's not:
Theist ➔ Agnostic ➔ Atheist
It's more like:
Belief (Theist / Atheist) ⬅ Separate from ⬅ Certainty (Gnostic / Agnostic)
No one has proof. We can't prove God exists, and we can't prove God doesn't exist.
So, the "gnostic" positions are not really justifiable.
That leaves:
- Agnostic Theists (believe, but admit they can't prove it)
- Agnostic Atheists (don't believe, but admit they can't prove non-existence)
We are all agnostic in the proper sense.
Also:
If someone asks:
Do you believe in God?
You can't answer:
I'm agnostic, that’s a different question.
You either believe or you don't. If you say "I'm not sure," that means you don't
believe, you're an agnostic atheist.
