Does a female dog have to be intact for her to be able to have intercourse?

I had regular sex with my pit before she needed Pyro surgery. This was when she was about 7 and found she was way to tight to enter after. While she didn't show signs of discomfort I didnt feel it was safe to continue. Seemed like the surgeon tightened her up to prevent her from being able to be penetrated.

I've read from other forums that best you can do is finger a female that is neutered and actually having sex with them is very dangerous and not recommended
