You may, I have a Swedish Ellhound, bit bigger than the average of the breed. The kennel he is from breed on "the old kind", slightly bigger and less of a "show dog" look, just breed on their hunting qualities and the kennel don't give a Duck about points during dog exhibition shows.

They are not a problem with cats if they grow up with them.
Our pack leader always chase away cats from the yard so they don't leave a dump where the cubs play. And he sort of picked up on cats being something to chase.
He killed a kitten that snuck in to the yard once and ate a few bites from it, so I don't trust him around cats.
