It might be that the avatar size and / or resolution is limited or your file format is not directly compatible.
Edit: If you want me to - and trust me in this regards - adjust the image so you can directly use it as avatar photo, just PM me with the image, I can do that for you and as well remove the EXIF data. But if you don't trust me, that's fully fine. It's just an offer and I can fully understand if someone wouldn't trust someone out of the blue.
Ah, and here are the related hints regarding the removal - you should be able to do this yourself as well, if you want:
