Things I do to strengthen the bond and intimacy: sniffing his ear to let him now I'm interested in having sex with him ("flirting"). Turning away when I'm on all fours and playfully playing "hard to get" when he wants to mount me.
Things I do which are not really sex related or animal behaviour related: When he pushes away my phone to get my attention, I will put my phone away, because I know I have been online too much and he misses cuddles. When he jumps up (when I'm sitting he will put his paws on my knees or when he's standing on the bed and I'm standing on the floor, he will put his paws on my shoulders) I will hug him, touch his fur, lay my head in his neck, sniff his fur, look at him..

Basically my approach is being as dog-like or horse-like (or whatever species your partner is) as possible, step into their world, their culture, their frame of reference and go from there rather than getting them to do human things with you. They can and often will, but starting out with things they can instantly relate with helps forumlate that mental and emotional association in their minds much more easily.

When they lick on or around my mouth I lick them back. It's easier to do this when they lick you from the front. Just giving them a quick lick on the nose or front of the mouth—not the corners of the mouth because that's sending a different message in canine language—as soon as they lick you, and then waiting for them to reciprocate, giving them lots of love and
?high-pitched? verbal praise with positive touch immediately after you lick to help them associate the experience positively in case they're confused or unsure.
Tips for kissing dogstyle on canine body language and helping them to relax into it: relax your tongue muscles completely and use upward motions of the head to lick, the head motion in dogs is often more pronounced while licking when they are more aroused or happy so this is a way to communicate that to them. Also avoid direct eye contact, I usually am looking at their muzzle or nose, and slightly close your eyes before and during making your eyes appear almost sleepy to indicate passivity, calmness and pleasure. At least in the beginning. This way you're not sending mixed signals. Body language and energy is everything with dogs.

Sniffing ears and licking muzzles is a definite go-to. We often engage in simple light play, such as gentle foot/hand smacking the other and rolling around on the floor with one or the other of us on our back while the other is above with gentle play fighting.
Sometimes it turns into full on play with racing about and mock fighting, but other times it stays relaxed and gentle.

I meant to say licking too, yes. I also use quick, short sniffing breaths like dogs do. Just helps add to the familiarity and making those associations, when they've got the connections in the minds, then they'll decide if they want to partake in things like mutual licking on the face, inside the ears, around their body. Basically anywhere my partner licks or nibbles me, I do the same with them.
I often visit my dog on the bed and just roll around on my back with him. He has a habit of pressing his head against my face and rubbing his entire body into me and I enjoy that very much.
This usually continues into a lot of kissing. Eventually I kind of can not resist and I playfully bite him which turns this whole thing into him jumping after one of his currently favorite toys and me chasing after him.
And when he is done playing with his toy, he asks me to play with his "other" toy.

lol yah play and sex go very much paw in paw among canines. One of the countless things I adore about them.
Everything is foreplay.
