You would have to go to quite some length to break it. It is about 1mm thick glass, short and there is practically no pressure put on it. But yes, using something not made of glass is preferable. :D

They apparently are also made of plastic.
So use that.

The problem is that 30 cm long hollow sounding silicone rods are not available to buy, so you have to improvise it a little bit.
