What does it mean if someone is following me?

I keep getting messages that someone is following me...
(No.. I am not looking behind my back every time I see such a notification...
Hahaha)
What does it mean and what does it do?
Does it give them benefits or me?
I am clueless.
 
You can follow people by clicking a button on their profile.
That adds the user to a list on your About page.
And if you have not disabled the options related to this in the settings, they might theoretically get notified of your new posts.

I follow you. But come to think of it. That has no benefit. I don't see your posts any different. I still have to look on your wall. I guess it just makes you, or anyone else I follow, that little bit easier to find to look at their posts to interact x
 
If they follow you, they will receive a notification when you write a comment. You can turn this off in the settings. They will continue to follow you, but will not receive any notifications.
