I was always my understanding that the spermatozoa was not able to penetrate the corona of the ovum. Though I could be mistaken.

There are species specific receptors that the sperm bind to and allows for penetration of the egg. Sort of like a lock and key. This is why most dog breeds can breed with each other (same lock and key). The human receptor is actually rather unique by comparison to others

I’m not sure why you would need to do these tests. Sperm enters the cervix and travels through the uterus. It is the actual purpose of these parts of the body. I’m confused why people seem to wonder whether sperm, which is all pretty biologically similar in mammals, can do it’s basic job. There is no debate here.

Its obvious - the question is does semen enter the uterus in milliliters (I think the uterus has the capacity of around 30 mil when doing hysterosalpingograms) or does a few micrograms of sperm cells enter the uterus.

As a medic I am sure you recognize this picture. The question is if a uterus and fallopian tubes are literally flooded with dog semen after a good knot like the picture or not.

I see the question now. No, sorry to disappoint, but they are not “flooded” regardless of size, shape, species. I would suggest you shift the mental model (and fantasy) to numbers and not volume. First of all, try to imagine sperm more like information (kind of like software) and less like matter. Second, let’s take humans (I don’t know the numbers for canine): each healthy ejaculate contains around ~3m - 1b sperm (rough numbers). Depending on the starting amount, only about 1-3m will actually reach the opening of the cervix. Only about 25-50% of those will make it through the cervix. Typically, we see about 10k-25k reach the top of the uterus. About 1-5k of those reach the utero-tubal junction. Only 100-1000 ever reach the egg. Most are needed to actually soften or “ripen” the egg so just 1 can get the job done. All the rest get “lost” meaning they are destroyed or literally go the wrong way. Finally, you should imagine an army of canine information trying to crawl and squiggle its instinctual way through the biological, physical machinery of a woman. But why do you say this. If HSG are possible, why cant semen be injected under pressure into the uterus. Something like this, which is not a typical scenario, needs to be tested experimentally.

Also, that imagine is Hysterosalpingography on fluro. We insert a flexible catheter through the cervix (hence my point earlier about manual dilation) and push in squirts of ~10cc hopefully not exceeding 50-100cc depending on what we are doing (it is made from a fish protein and not great on the kidney). This is usually done as part of a total and partial hysterectomy. This is not how sex works, though I understand people are curious to know if a dog cock could essentially to the job of the catheter. It is actually a hard technique to learn (easy once you have it). We essentially drop the catheter on the cervix and then “clock rotate” like a corkscrew and enter the cervix. Hard to explain but you’re using the tension of the catheter to find the opening.

That study is just showing pressure measurements when using a catheter. There are some congenial defects of the cervix that can increase pressure inside the uterus as a result of it being unable to “expel” normal fluids. The paper actually makes my point: pressure from the uterus out or the vagina in isn’t relevant. Again, pressure has nothing to do with it. Imagine a balloon that is tied at the end. Squeeze the balloon, the knot isn’t going to give (though enough pressure will cause damage to the rest of the balloon). Put pressure on the knot, still not going to give though you could damage the knot. Erase volume and pressure from your mind and instead imagine a vast adventure of canine sperm traveling through a huge superhighway of pitch black caverns. Imagine a human standing inside the Grand Canyon if it was 10-100x larger. That is the journey of sperm.
