Retained Testicle

Hey everyone! My boy is 12 weeks old now (GSD). When I brought him home from the breeder at 9 weeks his right testicle was retained and has still not descended.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there still a good chance it will come down? Will he behave differently / be any different if I have to get the right testicle removed?

Thanks

Hello.

So dogs are not really my thing but no one else has replied here.

I have always heard that retained testicles have much higher chance of developing cancer. You also won't know if it develops until much later because its inside. If you doubt this please do some research yourself. I always suggest using Google scholar or something to find real research papers not random blogs.

Personally I would have the retained testicle removed since it won't do anything good. Just like people animals can perform just fine with only one unless you are worried about fertility. I've seen breeding stallions with just one giant ball hanging.

Your vet will almost certainly suggest removing both. The prevailing theory is that cryptorchids are congenital but there isn't really any science to back that up. Anyway since I assume you want him intact you can just say "No I would just like the retained one removed. Thank you." Contrary to what so many people say on these boards in my experience that usually ends the conversation. It is your animal and your property to do whatever you want with. They might try to convince you but all you have to say is "Nah I'm good just pull that one out." The worst that will happen is they don't want you as a client anymore so you go find someone else. No one is going to call the cops or think you bang your dog. At most they will think you are an idiot and idiot money is the same as normal money. Also this isn't a normal castration so expect to pay a good amount. Start saving now.

Hope this helps in some way. I won't be around for a few days so I'm unlikely to reply if you have more questions. This being an internet board I suspect this answer will get you several others with different opinions though. Good luck!

It is correct that the risk for a cancer later in life is present. The retained testicle is too warm and that may result in overproduction of hormones leading to aggression when he is mature. Still, there is a chance that the retained testicle will come down on its own. Warm surroundings may help this in the way. Some Vets may be willing to help things in the way. If the testicle has not arrived when he is ~6 months, it is unlikely to do so. I would suggest a surgical removal at an age of 1 year, but your Vet should be the first choice to ask for advice. .

Thank you both for your replies. Since posting this I have done some research. I agree, if the other testicle does not descend I will have it removed as his health and well being is what's most important to me. I'm just glad to hear he can still perform with one and that there is still time for it to come down.

There is a story around. May not be true, but tells a little about how these things work. There was a very promising dog, the tale mentions some breeds, bur Irish Wolfhound is the most common. He only had one testicle down, so the reckless owner had a reckless Vet implant a "falsie" in the empty spot. The dog was registered for a reputable dog show and the day came. It was warm at the dog show and quite some stress for all. Your hopeful young dog came in the ring, and the judge checked him over. At some point she left the ring and came back with an executive judge. He checked the dog and asked he owner: "Can you explain to me why your dog has three testicles?" The high temperatures and the stress may be likely to have helped the descent in the way. Needless to say that the dog was disqualified.

I have this issue too at the moment. My shepsky is not 8 months and the other hasn’t dropped. My vet has refused to leave the good one when it comes time to do the surgery. Unfortunately the vets where I live aren’t taking on new clients so I’m stuck with the one I have. I’m thinking about waiting until he’s two with a lot of experience so that when he does have the surgery I hoping he will still want to have sex with me even though he can no longer cum. Does that sound reasonable?

I would not expect significant sexual activity after neutering. It is possible but the exception and not the rule. You have plenty of time. I would keep searching for a vet to just remove the retained one.

This website might have some good options: https://www.parsemus.org/pethealth/hormone-sparing-sterilization/

Just a little update. It’s about the time to make a decision, he’s a year and three months now. We’ve had a bit of fun together, he’s interested and eager but tends to hop off just as it’s growing. My ass hasn’t seen much action since the passing of my Mastiff so I haven’t been playing much with my new guy out of fear or injury and also the last few years I’ve been in heavy depression so the sex drive is down. It just seems a lot of bother to rinse out, play, possibly get hurt, I’ve locked with him twice and he’s pulled the knot out before he was firmly set and both times I had that hot rush of almost passing out.
As for his behaviour, before his sexual maturity he was the sweetest and happiest dog in the dog park, all humans and most dogs loved him. The mastiff’s all want to kill him but we didn’t see them often. A few months ago he started turning on dogs that used to be his best friends and randomly attacking some new dogs he’s never met when they first come into the dog park. Some of his friends there’s been no change at all although some of his former friends he doesn’t have an issue with are nervous of him. Being that he’s half husky he has a very high prey drive and sometimes his recall is shit, just completely ignores me for the skunk down the path. He doesn’t have the opportunity to escape the house and take off on his own but I can imagine that if he did, he would.
I don’t like the bad personality traits he’s been developing so I’m about 95% sure I’m going to get both his nuts cut off very soon. His happiness and more importantly his safety and the safety of other peoples dogs are my main concerns when making this decision. It’s too bad he couldn’t remain good natured with everyone like my Hank who only ever had problems with dogs who had issues with unfixed males but wcyd? They’re all individuals. Anyway, that’s my update, probably no new porn coming from us.
