About odd fruits, reminds me of an old cartoon with Ferdinand the Bull. He likes to sit under a cork oak and smell the flowers. They had drawn a lot of cork stoppers hanging from the tree like fruits.

I guess the cartoon is from the 1950s.
In my country they every Friday a lot of cartoons is shown, including short ones from 1950s or earlier. I think they were uses in the movie theatres between the film shows.
EDIT : found a picture, not from the cartoon I have seen, but same meaning.
