A "Straight Eight" is an Eight- cylinder engine arranged inline. A V-8 is arranged as a vee with four cylinders on each arm of the vee, sweet girl...There were engines in that Day as long as twelve cylinders....its one reason why the autos of the early 20s thru the 30s were so long from front to cockpit. Until the V-8 came long, power was grudgingly increased by adding pistons. The other normal engine type was radial, which worked for airplanes for speed and power, but that one wasn't practical for autos.
Thank-you for this informative reply. The daughter of a gearhead might have come into that knowledge, if I hadn't been busy looking for pretty ladies in his Hot Rod magazines.
