I was so sorry to read about SS United States. She was such a beautiful ship, so much prettier than the tourist ships we now see... Here she is on her final journey.

Indeed, she was...I dont think I ever toured her, but I saw her in Port in NYC...probably about 1963...she wasnt as big as some but she challenged the Crossing Speed records then...and that Riband was the way all Passenger liners Knew who held the Record.

A female mechanical engineer (very unusual for the time) designed the propellers for this ship. If I recall, she came up with a unique design that not only practically eliminated the vibration due to cavitation, but helped propel her to record setting speeds!!

Willie Gillis, N Rockwell's boy soldier en Convoy....about 1944View attachment 652502
Looking at this a little better, Oor Willie is not wearing a field jacket, but his combat blouse....And while theres no actual info being conveyed by this painting, He DOES seem to be wearing a "Ranger" flash. Rockwell was careful with the truck numbers too....The idea is correct, but it's a nonsense number.
Note that the other gents are wearing M-43 field jackets. These ought to have field markings indicating Units; divisional patch, and a regimental flash, at least. They don't... to keep the enemy guessing. Rockwell knew his stuff.

Wartime needs are the ONLY ACCEPTIBLE form of censorship.
