(But yeah relatable when it comes to finding people to hang with who aren't just trying to use you and your mate)

I've only found a few zoo friends over the years, and they're almost never local enough to hang with on a regular basis. It's a lot of fun when it happens though, even with no critters involved.

Weirdly enough, most of the better zoo friends I have, I found through the furry community. I think it's because you get to know someone first, and then later realize "hmm, yeah they probably are". On the forum people tend to be sex focused and everything else goes by the wayside.

Yeah, I can really relate to that part, very few and far between with meeting any other zoos especially close by. But I do agree is awesome to hang out with others who aren't going to judge you and who like animals and treat them well.
Same goes for my zoo friends I'm closest with being furries, like myself. You're right that the forum tends to have a fetish lens that prevents more natural friendships and concersations that arent sex driven.
