Is this illegal and am I doing something bad?

not to mention that they now have "tech" sniffing dogs that can locate thumb drives behind walls.

In other words, it doesn't matter where the drive is, inside or outside a computer, until it's been *PHYSICALLY DESTROYED* - as in run through a grinder and chopped into too many bits for any hope of reassembly before the heat-death of the universe - it's possible with the technology today to recover *ANYTHING THAT HAS EVER BEEN STORED ON A MAGNETIC-MEDIA STORAGE DEVICE FROM THE MOMENT THE MAGNETIC MEDIA WAS LAID DOWN ON THE PLATTERS*, and absolutely nothing but the total physical destruction of the platters can stop "them" from looking at every single byte of data that has ever been written to that device if "they" decide that they don't care what the cost of doing so might be.

The jury is still out on whether this is a true statement for the new "solid state" drives - including "thumb drives". I've seen literature saying that it's at least THEORETICALLY possible for some of the types of storage used in some of them, and I've seen other literature that says there's no chance at all, alongside literature that says "maybe, if it's this type, but definitely not if it's that type, but for this third type, maybe if the conditions are just right, and for a fourth type, there's no hope of recovering anything." Well right now under current laws viewing and possession of the porn that I do have is completely legal so there is no worry there. I suppose that if there ever comes a time when it should become illegal I will either stop or go to a dedicated computer that can be easily hidden for such viewing and other questionable activities.

Use a dedicated computer, a virtual machine and a VPN at a minimum.

I heard once that it's not illegal unless you participate in it or directly possess zoo content and that only viewing it is fine in the state of NC. However I can not find any laws or bills etc to confirm or deny this. If it's not legal for me to view this, then I'll try to put a stop to it completely in compliance with the law. First, though, I need to know if it is against the law. Any legal help?

As far as law, illustrations or "cartoon" animal porn is still very legal, and erotic "fiction" (usually true stories billed as fiction) is still very legal. You cannot get into legal trouble for having those on your computer. If those are good enough to satisfy you, then you can still enjoy these and be considered compliant with the law.

Currently, zoophiles are being persecuted, and most of society and our well-meaning legislature are not really to blame for it.

Sometimes, evil people try to pass themselves off by translating their vicious game as a sort of "moral crusade." What really drives them is the same instinct that drives hunting dogs on the trail of a deer. They are vicious thugs. However, these shitty suck ass human beings are often temporarily successful at getting thousands of people convinced that their helpless victims really are so sinister and dangerous as to warrant alarm, and people that otherwise would have had good intentions can get caught up in the witch-hunt.

Laws thereby get passed that treat the victims of this witch-hunt in the same way that violent criminals would be treated, even though the victims of this witch-hunt had coexisted with society peacefully for thousands of years.

You are not really bad, but right now, people like you are being defamed. Right now, a lot of well-meaning people are genuinely convinced that you are in the same category as a grinning drugged up sociopath that would skin an animal alive as some sick joke. The people that are caught up in this witch-hunt genuinely do not know that this is not true, but they are still being egged-on by the same demagogues that started the witch-hunt. It is not helping that some zoos get their feelings hurt and react to these perceptions with self-defeating rage, which just feeds the illusion.

The show Zooier Than Thou is led by a team of public relations experts, and they are working on trying to deescalate, and we are starting to gradually develop a circle of allies that have begun to see through this witch-hunt. It is a slow process.

If you ever feel up to joining in with organized efforts, I want to plant something in your mind. The best activists and the most effective advocates are, deep down in their hearts, rule-followers, and if you are a rule-follower at heart, then we really need people like you involved in the community and advocacy efforts. If your instinct is to prefer to be compliant, then your voice is one we particularly need.

Again, illustrations are not going to get you into trouble, and they are your best route for staying compliant with the law.
