Because even asking such a question is begging for a jail cell. Just suppose the lady has a mare that cuts herself scratching on a stall rail....then someone comes along and asks an obviously zooish question?
Fair, but also, it's a niche thing. A specialty that's pretty limited in this day and age. It doesn't make it invalid, it just makes it not well known. There's a word for a wine taster too, but I doubt many people outside the wine loving world know that word.
Oenology probably equates to OBGYN these days. Nothing surprises me in the 'stupid' department.

A Sommelier is a pro-taster; one of my friends/ clients went to Le Cordon Bleu School ten or so years ago....its co-sponsored by Reidel Crystal... But the overall Science is Oenology. Of course, If they arent equating it with OBGYN, they probably subscribe to "Wine Expectorator" Monthly.
If you really start counting Wannabees here, Dartel, you'll be left with maybe 16 members. Made anything like a knife? People watch stuff like that for a lot of reasons, but theres no guarantee they learned anything. City folk don't see horses everyday, since mid-20th C., unless youre in a city with a strong A-rab presence. And those are an endangered species these days.
