I’m not sure. However I have an idea. Dogs being predators give off sent that pray gives off. If you roll in something that smells like another animal you cover your own smell. The same way us hunters do. You know what my grandfather used back in the day? Fox piss. You know what that smells like? Very close to skunk. The first time I used it my fucking god it was horrible. But it worked.
