Lol, "smut" welding arts.. yes, it can - I had made something which would resemble "smut" in the first time I was active at the forum here (not the chat server - that was prior to being active in the forum itself. Main reason for not posting in the first year).
I guess you had seen it anyway, the stainless steel fortune cookie? If not, I might find it.
That "counter art" is as well a very thin stainless steel (1.4310) plate, a scrap piece which I used to collect downfall of molten metal. It is 0,8 mm thin (0,0315 inches) and melts on around 1550°C (2822°F).
As the scrap piece is quite messy from both sides (even as I cleaned it roughly) it's almost impossible to weld without dirt getting into the fluid metal and resulting in unclean alloys. But I guess it's readable.
