Like the others I'm definitely sorry about your loss MrsShemon. These animals, it doesn't mater the species whether canine, equine, feline, cervine, caprine, or whatever else... come into our lives and attach themselves to your heart. And when they eventually cross that rainbow bridge they take a piece of your heart with them leaving us with a lot of pain, but also a plethora of good past memories as well. We can also cherish the fact that we gave them the best life we possibly could give to them.
As for sex though, while there's nothing more special that sharing it with someone you absolutely love and hold dearly, I'm also not above having some mutual fun with others as well. In my case others being other canines that are not mine, as I've definitely had sex with other canines that belonged to other zoos, and my newfie girl has let three of my friends have sex with her too. Typically sex being considered something sacred is more of a human specific phenomenon. Often I find with animals their main want when it comes to sex is to know that they can stop and any time, and they want the mere sensation of feeling pleasured even if that pleasure comes from outside of their pack.
But sex is just sex. Nothing beats getting yourself involved with a longstanding relationship with such a loving and beautiful creature that wants nothing more than to be loved and cherished by you, and want nothing more than to cherish and love you.

Personally, I am a bit of a prude when it comes to a sexual partner. Never liked the one night stand or fuck buddy thing. I prefer when I feel like I belong to my partner. Not as in ownership or something like that, but an emotional bond.
But when that bond is formed I am not a prude when it comes to sex with that person (regardless of species)
I am also extremely faithful to the ones I bond with, might be a bit of a oxymoron as I had both human and canine partner at the same time. It has been more of a "No other human than the one I belong to, no other canine than the one I belong to" deal.

Even if I were the "one man with one canine for life" type of person, my canine would likely feel otherwise if given the chance. A male dog is going to take the opportunity to get some pleasure even if it's with someone outside of the pack, and a female will more often than lot allow someone outside of the pack also have their way with her especially when in heat. While you can try to maintain monogamous relationships with them, they are by nature often quite promiscuous.

Yes, I had a bit of an emotional dilemma with the old boy as I am not the only female he mated with. But instead of feeling betrayed as I would have if my husband went and dipped it in some other girl, I rationalised it the same way you did, they don't really have the same monogamous mindset as some humans have and decided that I would just accept the situation/relationship for what it was.
