A little late to the conversation, but I think the only time my newfie howls is occasionally when I go to take her outside. It's kind of hard to describe but it's kind of a "Awooowoowoogrrr" with an ever so slight sounding growl sound at the very end, though not actually a growl. It's actually friggin' adorable! I'll often give her an "Awooowoowoogrrr" back to her when she does it. I've never heard my littler girl give an awoo in her life though.
