For a mule it is only one chromosomal difference up to horse or down to donkey.
Normaly mules are not bred. In ancient times mules were bred to donkeys. While the theory is that mules should be sterile, all it takes if for one egg to be "intact" during mating. Rare beyond questioning but still a fact. The recent mare birthing in Mexico have changed the theory about uneven number of chromosomes=infertility as closely related species apparently can breed with a mix of their species to.
