So those with s/o, I haven’t heard much about people successfully getting someone into zoo play, but how did you figure out they were into it without making them uncomfortable or giving away that you were interested before you knew?

No don't do that. Drop some tiny hints, play some games (truth or dare / if you had to pick one) accidently find some softer stuff and see reaction et cetera.

No, I cried hysterically like a little girl and begged to be understood in incoherent sentences while hoping that he would not leave me.

I don't recomend that.
 
Like above start small.
Asking what they feel about animal behavior and or intelligence. Just completely not in a sexual way just in general. If they think animals can't think for themselves that gives an indicator. Seeing how they feel about furries and anthros would be good. Again subtly. Plenty of movies, shows and video games with them in it.
One good one after getting a good feel is the. "If someone is a werewolf is it okay since they are human to begin with." Or " If I was a werewolf would you be okay with it and what would be acceptable"
That is advanced stuff though. But still very deniable if things go bad.
Also setting it up to look like you might be furry can be a good thing. Being furry is not illegal.

Based on personal experience this is sound advice. I am an out in the open furry and did use it to help move along conversations in a zoo direction with positive results. Though ultimately my partner got full confirmation because I forgot to close a porn window…..luckily instead of emotional devastation in turned into a funny story they still tease me about from time to time.

It’s still always best to take small steps, leave little hints and build from there.
