Hello Zooland:
I will be having a bitch to as I move into this new world. I want to get a great dane since it seems she will be able to take my size. I was thinking about getting a puppy from a breeder to raise her nurture her and develop a close relationship. I was also thinking about getting an older dane. Any suggestions on which bitch I should get as well as other suggestions for starting out in this lifestyle?

Following since I've been thinking about the same thing. I get my own place soon and I'll be getting a dog. I haven't settled on anything yet, but I'm fairly certain she'll be a black lab. I was worried about raising a puppy while working, but I'm on night shift now so that should work out well.

To answer both your questions. You can do it either way. You can develop this relationship with either one. Dogs are cool this way. I have met dogs of all ages that are all over me from the start. I have this odd ease of making friends with animals. The oddest being a goose in apark who would not leave me alone. It fallowed me everywhere honking in a friendly fashion and kept trying to hop in my lap every time I would sit down. I also had stray, friendly pup that was all over me when I put him in the back of my truck, offered him some kitty kibble, and sat and talked with him. I made some friendly sqeeking noises like many folks do with dogs and he jumped me, rude little bugger. He in short bonded with me in that short few minutes.

You find the right older dog and you will have a companion for life. These two breeds are well know for making fast friends and awesome companions. You treat them with love, kindness, and respect and they will give it back in return ten fold. Sometimes these dogs will initiate the friendly contact and those cold noses will end up in places that could be bit awkward. Dogs seem to have notion about a persons inner being and motives and act on it. Dogs love me and often times I have trouble keeping them away whenever I meet one.

I say if you have doubts about raising a pup or it is not practical go with the elder option. Often the older already trained route is the best one. Raising a puppy is very time consuming and full of frustration sometimes especially if you have never done it before.

Both will work it is just up to you based on your level patients and time allotment. Also property damage is another concern when raising pups.

Good luck in your search.
