Smelly discharge after fingering - normal or a warning sign?

Hello

my female dog is ~12 days into her second heat. she is 1,5 years old, medium sized mix, not spayed.

on saturday (8 days into heat) i fingered her for the first time. i cut my nails, used a nail file to remove spiky parts and thoroughly washed my hands beforehand. After not even 5 minutes of fingering she had a really smelly discharge.
She licked it up before I could see anything but there was a spot on the blanket. I immediately stopped but didnt think too much.

On the next day on sunday I smelled that smell again, but only once. I just yesterday learned about Pyometra (shame on me). Her behavior is normal though. No other symptomps. Except In the first week she was much more quiet and low energy, I attributed that to her heat. And that has changed back to normal now close to her second week.

Yesterday and today her behavior is completely normal and energetic. I will continue pay very close attention.

Is it possible it was a reaction to my fingering, and despite washing hands I inserted dirt/ bacteria into her vulva, immediately causing the discharge? (perhaps dirt from under the nail that I missed). I read pyo usually starts 2 weeks after heat, not during.

Curious for your experience in regards to discharge in connection to fingering. Thank you.

Needless to say I havent done anything sexual to her since and Im rather scared since i read about Pyo.

Don't play, and check again tomorrow. With my boxer you could sort of "squeeze/milk" her vulva to see if a smelly yellow/green discharge would come out of her vagina (not urethra). Brownish/red is typically normal heat discharge. If so, you can go in for antibiotics, more easily blamed on a UTI (frequent peeing, blood in urine) to avoid the spay topic.

But keep an eye on her, especially a week or two after her heat, especially if she is lethargic. A spay will likely be recommended by the vet regardless, they see it as a catch all/no brainer thing for any issue in that area... One of the most difficult parts about having a female. Next heat you might also try using a condom, some can have a reaction to your semen.

It couldn’t be from you fingering her for the first time if you seen / smelled that discharge 5 min after doing it lol. Infection can’t happen instantly like that.

Regarding the situation at hand, it doesn’t hurt to get an opinion from the vet. Try to snap a photo or video after she pees and check for discharge so you can show the vet.
It’s always best to play it safe instead of waiting and letting a possible issue get worse.
Our animal companions don’t have the ability to tell us when something isn’t right, sure they have their own ways of showing it but it’s hard to tell at times.
IMO: Have the vet check it out but I don’t think it’s from fingering her since you said that was the first time and you saw that discharged shortly after.

Yea I agree with the others here, maybe just take her in for a checkup to be safe. You will just have to get used to people telling you to spay her. I just respond with my belief that spaying hinders growth and bone development and that I won't cut out her organs for convenience.

But yea, get her checked, better safe than sorry.

The heat is stinky.

If there is not a continuous discharge that is yellowish, brownish or pinkish, then it is definitely not pyo.

Pyo is very rare in young dogs.
