Quarantine and Social Distancing

genuinely curious how others are dealing with the reality of the times. I really do take the pandemic seriously, and i3also believe in science.

that said, i also have a libido, and it is at odds with ny brain. there are times when i am almost feeling a sexual. other times, i can't keep my hands off myself. a big part of sexuality is in including others with my partner and me. love threesomes, foursomes, and groups. but we haven't been able to do anything. and finding sex partners who also understand my particular proclivities is challenging under ideal circumstances...

how are you all coping? am i the only frustrated one out here?

Well, I'm lucky in a sense that I live alone with two female canines, and they tend to satisfy all my sexual needs, as I satisfy both of theirs. Not everyone is that lucky, unfortunately.

I also tend to take this pandemic seriously as well, and venture out as little as possible, and of course wear a mask then I do have to venture out. I'm also lucky enough to work from home (for now.) I have health problems! While the coronavirus most likely wouldn't kill me, as I'm still young. I would more than likely require extensive hospitalization.

I couldn't really give a shit about that, but what scares me the most is that no one around me is willing to watch my dogs if I were to land in the hospital. I would be completely screwed. I would have to fill as many bowls of water as possible, dump a crap ton of food on the floor and hope for the best. This scares me because I love my doggy girls more than the world itself. I don't see any other options.

So I guess you can say, I'm simply coping and hoping I don't get sick.

thing are kinda getting back to normal here besides having to wear a mask at work. gotta admit i didn't really mind the quarantine anyway, i already live with ones i love.. and social distancing is sort of what i normally do

are dog hotels or something similar not a thing where you live?

It's frustrating to me because so many events that are my social outlets are cancelled or scaled back. And interstate travel being taboo with the traveler quarantine rules it means that events going on in other parts of the country I could go to are now impractical.

So now instead of hopping on the Harley for multi-day or week long road trips to destinations it's day trips to kill time this summer. If things don't improve my plans for going to Daytona in October for Biketoberfest are going to be flushed as well and then I'll be really pissed. It will be an entire riding season for me that will have been covid-cancelled.

I haven’t been any closer to my love since this shit broke out. It’s getting quite tiresome actually. Taking a break

Well, I live out in a house in a small town. If I caught the coronavirus I will more than likely need to go to the hospital, otherwise I risk having a heart attack. We have kennels around here that in theory I could board my dogs to but there's two problems to this. 1) I would have to book in advance, and if I caught covid-19 I probably would not be able to do so. 2) If I have covid-19 most kennels are not going to touch me nor my dogs.

So, I'm unfortunately limited to what I can do for my girls.

Most veterinarians offer boarding services. Being up front about Covid19 may cause a problem but you could call around now to inquire and that way you might find an option in case you were to become infected.

I might have to do that. I've looked around when I was planning on taking a week long vacation (which got canceled due to covid-19) and around my area there are only like 3-4 kennels within a 50 mile radius. But also a bunch of pet sitters.

I definitely would be upfront about the issue of Covid-19 as I don't want to put anyone else's life in danger. I mean take myself for example, I'm a 24 year old male, with a slight dad bod figure who looks pretty healthy. Looking at myself from an outside perspective no one would guess that I'd be in serious danger if a caught it. I definitely don't want to spread it to anyone else if I got it. I don't think I'd ever forgive myself if I ended up killing someone due to keeping the information of a hypothetical infection a secret, if I were to actually catch it.

It's always a good thing to have a plan of action in place in case you ever need to use it. It's as important as emergency supplies in case you are unable to make it to the store.
As a last option for your girls you can put a kennel pen like a 10 by 10 and a couple of dog houses for their keeping while you are away. You can also purchase auto feeders that hold up to 50 pounds of dog food and operate off of solar power. They also have auto watering troughs but if you are a little mechanical you can make one yourself using a toilet bowl water fill device and a garden hose to connect water. Keep in mind that water is most important - dogs can go over a week without any food but 3 or 4 days without water and they will die. Also if you set up a kennel make certain that it has shade - the sun can cause a dog to have a stroke very easy.

Edit: As a last thought if you set up a kennel it is better to set it up on a slab of concrete to keep your dogs from digging under.

Thanks! I'll definitely have to look into getting an automatic water and food dispenser, that's a good idea! I'm sure I could find them both online. I'll have to probably negate the backyard kennel for now, as it's way too hot where I live, and my newfie girl doesn't do well in heat at all. But I can keep the A/C going inside and see about getting such a system setup in the kitchen, if it's ever needed.

I don't care if they end up having to use the bathroom inside, both of my girls don't eat poop, and I have a carpet cleaner for a reason. I can absolutely store these dispensers in my basement with no problems until they were ever needed.

My uncle took a small stainless steel tank and made a water bowl out of it with a toilet bowl water fill device and attached it to the water line in the kitchen with a flexible hose. He also did a larger one that is outside in their dog pens. The one in my kitchen I can move around to clean under and around it real well and it's always full of water for my guys. Don't know if they sell anything like that but I am sure you can figure out how to make one. All of the auto water dispensers I have seen have a water bottle that you have to fill and that is kind of self defeating if you were to be gone for any period of time.

Hmm... I thinking of nabbing maybe 10-12 of these? - 1 gallon water dispenser - Amazon As well as some food dispensers to go along with it.

My two dogs are 35 lbs and 115lbs.

That should work for about 7 days I'd imagine? If needed, I can always leave against medical recommendation and refill them, but that would require me driving myself to the hospital. Which might not be possible, but I will make best efforts to do so. I'll have to look further and find out if they make a 5 gallon types. Do you think something like that would work, or in your opinion would that be a waste of money?

For water I would go with something more along this Easy-Clean Water Bowl Water Bow with 10ft Stainless Steel Hose - Amazon.com

I would use it full time so I know it functions properly and the dogs know where to get their water from too. Two of them might be better and you can place them in different locations. That way if one fails there is always the other.

For food you might want to go with the feed version of what you showed. AmazonBasics Gravity Pet Food Feeder and you should probably figue for 1 of these for ever day you would be away or if your dogs don't eat until they burst you can save your money and just take a large bag of dog food and lay it in the floor and just split it open or a better choice might be to take a large tote and cut one end off and pour the dog food into it. A 50 pound sack of dog food should keep your girls in food for a week easily if they don't stuff themselves. Even so they can go a week without food but water is essential.

I'm not sure where you live but places like Tractor Supply & different Farmers Co-Op's sell automatic dog feeders that can hold up to 40 pounds of dog food and some of their automatic water dispensers use a 5 gallon water jug like the ones you see in offices. I have two Rottweilers who live inside and they have their own bedroom that I constantly keep at 70° during the summer and 72° during the winter. I also have two automatic dispensers on a couple of water spigots outside that they can walk up to and bump with her nose and it lets water come out so they can drink until they've had their fill. They might have to bump it several times to drink as much water as they want but it works fine. Just a couple of suggestions. Hope it helps

Definitely something like that would be awesome if I could utilize it, but I would need something that would work directly on my faucet tap. My house was built back in the 50s, it did have an outside water spigot at some point, as evidenced by the hole in the basement wall leading outside. However, the plumbing pipes have been completely overhauled before I moved in, and whatever genius did the work removed the outside water spigot completely. My house has been renovated at least 3 times since being initially built. The last overhaul was of the plumbing. However, it was done in a sketchy manner. I've had numerous plumbers tell me that "Yes, your current setup works okay, and there shouldn't be any problems out of your current setup for the most part, but it was done very improperly."

I've looked into possibly adding a spigot myself but I've run into a few problems doing so, mainly having to cut into the pex piping to add it, or cutting into the main metal line (witch is actually the most ideal method.) I don't feel comfortable doing to myself, as I don't have a proper tools nor training. But I do intend on having one installed by a plumber at some point.

My mutt mix doesn't tend to overeat, but my newfie does, if left to her own devices.

The last thing I'm concerned about is reading the reviews on the product. It seems that the majority of the most recent reviews state that it "leaks a little" to "it leaks a lot." But I will maybe look into getting one that is higher quality and also works on an inside tap now that you've let me know that such a thing exists! Thanks!

Funny enough, I have a tractor supply 16 minutes away, one town over. TS is the only place that I can find my girl's food that seems to work with her overly sensitive tummy. If I can find one that can accommodate a 5 gallon jug, three of those should let me get by for 7 days. I could even pick up a forth unit for good measure. I'm pretty smart with my finances, so money isn't an issue. I'm willing to throw as much money as needed towards keeping my doggy girls safe and healthy. I could also scour pet supply stores as well, I have a PetCo and a PetSmart not too far from me, maybe 30 minutes away a few towns over.

I'll have to scour my local TS store to see if they have one of those units. I do greatly appreciate your and KnotInterested's input on the matter. I deeply love my dogs and have been worrying about such a scenario ever since I found out I was at high risk, as I didn't know the virus is dangerous with people with heart conditions up until a couple of weeks ago. Knowing I have options put me at a bit of ease, as I've been biting my nails over this.

Never forget about Amazon – that SOB sells just about everything. If I remember correctly I think that might've been where I bought the apparatuses for my outdoor water spigot's.

I live by my self with my dogs. So life continues much as it always has for me. Though I find I have to go into town more often than normal to see my doctors(still recovering from a car accident) Most people in town though arn't wearing a mask...and neither do I.
I don't blame you, I can't stand them down masks either. I don't believe they do that much good anyway, especially if you wash your hands enough.

Plenty of Rover people who would either sit your pets or drop them off at the kennel. Your choice I have one who walks and feeds mine uses my lock box key.

Use a pass through pet door if you can afford the electric collar and install it.

I'm not a fan of the shock collar unless you use the beep part to train with and you can buy collars that only beep. The shock part is just mean and makes a dog fear things even more than normal! Actually if you know how to train a dog then you don't even need a beeping collar. Dogs are easy to train so I see no need for the shock collar at all.

shepherd has the mind of an 8 year old so easy to train don't believe in shock collars pincher collars they are not need working with a k9 by training it to commands and hand signals they are very smart i trained military dogs for 21 years and never used anything but voice and hand signals now as far as this virus all i have to say is i have an aunt that was told she had it and she has major health problems was told on a monday that she had it went home on a wednesday and nobody else that was around her has even gotten sick so there u have my 2 cents i'm still doing what i have been doing all year
Well, a dog doesn't have "the mind of an 8 year old" they have the mind of a juvenile canine when young, and the mind of an adult canine when they are adults. It's important not to anthropomorphize them as canines have canine intelligence, while humans have human intelligence. Canines are usually said to have the cognitive capabilities of a 2 year old child. But this is only if filtered through our own human perspective.

In reality canines have their own unique set of cognition and their own form of intelligence. It's not an accurate to compare them to ourselves, as we are two very different species.

Everyone has their own form of training which works best for an individual dog, a lot of times it's trial and error. But some sets of training is more effective than others. My two dogs have slightly differing forms of training that work the most effectively for them. While my newfie is a whole lot smarter than my mutt mix, she pretty much ignores hand signals as a whole and verbal works best for her. While my mutt mix does a little better while using both and and verbal and hand signal training. It's best to find out what works for you dog in particular, as your dog is as much as an individual as yourself.

Dogs and humans have completely different kinds of intelligence but we as humans always seem to relate to ourselves the intelligence of any animals. I think in the dog world the Border Collie, then the Poodle, then the German Shepherd in that order are suppose to be the smartest. I don't know about the other two, but I own 6 German Shepherds and they are extremely smart animals. Training them is a breeze because of their intelligence. I've read that they have a understanding of over 500 words in our vocabulary but in training them one word commands work best. They understand hand signals very well also and can be trained to do a wide variety of different jobs. I fully understand why the Police and Military use them widely.

Not a shock collar a pass through unlock for the pet door. Works like a toll transponder dog door locks magnetic and opens when dog comes in . I don't like shock collar either. Only had to use on one dog when I was younger because he always escaped from the yard. Was activated by boundary line. I wouldn't have used it on him except we had loads of traffic on the street and I was concerned he would be ran over.

Mostly because of their temperament they are extremely active well balanced and large enough to knock over a suspect. While also able to handle being in a crowd and not being distracted. Been my experience they have extreme focus ,they intensely go for one task at hand. Great all around dogs and great lovers.( My Lovers picture is attached he has so much energy) . He is a mix of unknown sources but I think he is mostly Shepard and Lab.IMG_20200509_103706.jpg
