The qualifications are very amusing! But, all make sense.
It was legit.
The Pony wanted people they wouldnt be called to task for by families of the Riders and Hostlers....In 1860, the main route was through indian country all the way to Sacramento. I've driven the route, except for the miles in Missouri and visited every Pony Stop still extant....it would have been a tough ride even without people shooting at you. Here in Nevada, Independent stops that weren't a general store or an Army post were often built without a roof. They were taking advantage of Nevada's notable lack of precip, which is less than 7 inches a year....Those stops were just walls of native Tufa. That stuff will take the toes right out of your boots...Like a sponge,but made of glass. All edges.
 
This is The Whitman Mission Memorial in Walla Walla, Wa. 13 people died here in what was a Dance of Ignorance. Went there once, but the Ghosts are still haunting this place. I could not stay. Narcissa Whitman was considered to be the first White American woman west of the Rockies. Unfortunately her parents named her appropriately
