Spanish survives because Spanish-speakers accidentally turn parts of their language into loanwords in every country where they live.
Spanish-speaker: "'Como te llama' just means 'what's your name.'" <---no mention of it being Spanish, not English.
Ignorant English-speaker: "Cool! I just learned a new English word! Commatiyomma!"
A new loanword is thereby created!
We English-speakers actually butcher our own language on purpose. We think it's cute. The spelling "chiwawa" is how we would expect a young child to spell "chihuahua," so someone that is trying to sound cute might use the incorrect spelling. This is an outgrowth of the fact that English has a lot of bizarre silent letters and loanwords, so the way that things are spelled do not really make all that much sense. You just know how to spell them. We are used to young people being young adults before they really know correct English, and misspelling it frequently (often deliberately) is just an accepted part of youth culture.
My husband grew up speaking Spanish, and from what I understand, Spanish is spelled how it is pronounced, most of the time, at least compared with English. Even though I understand that there are many different dialects of Spanish, I think that the differences between the languages lead to different customs.
