Not Knotting

I have a GSD that is 20 months old now. I got him 2.5 months ago. After the first 5 days of him being here, he approached me in bed and wanted to play. He started licking and showing interest in playing. He mounted and knotted me no problem but, it was so intense, I had to abort. Since then, the still shows affection and mounts but doesnt hump nor knots inside of me. He knots in his sheath. How can I fix the issue? Not sure why he is not active after mounting. Help please.
 
So, at first, he was up for it almost lying nightly. After the first time he actually knotted me and I pulled out due to it hurting so much, he never humped again. Weeks of just mounting and me inserting but him knotting in his sheath but still hard and cumming. Now, he won't even mount. He runs and gets a toy instead and avoids it. I don't know what happened but it's gone down hill. I can't get him aroused by jacking. We have gone 2 or 3 days at a time and the gap gets bigger as time goes along. Use to be daily for a month or more. Now nothing. I've had him 2 and 1/2 months now.
 
To catch his interest I just play around normally and get him excited. Rub his belly and crawl around etc. It use to work. Now it doesn't.
 
I appreciate this feedback. I have backed off and tried just letting him decide when he wants to be intimate. The issue is, after that initial experience, he has never humped again. I was afraid that you would say it hurt him as well which is probably why he isn't doing it. I may have been his first experience ever and it hopefully did not damage him.
 
he is very smart and I feel he will come around. He has made alot of progress and feel its right around the corner.. Thank you for the advice!
