Neutered dogs

Hi all, what would be an acceptable way or reason to ask foŕ an unsterilized dog without people catching on or getting suspicious?

Beastality isnt what comes to mind when a dog is nuetered or not. I dont see an intact dog and assume it is being fondled in private. Just say, "I'd rather have a dog who is not neutered" and if pressed you can say "i think it is cruel to nueter them".

It takes a little effort on your part, but effort that can pay off in greater quality of care due to being more informed about canine health....
I would suggest reading up on the negative efffects of neutering as well as the positive ones as there are many reasons to keep a dog intact for health; neutering can increase certain caincers, muscular/joint/skeletal issues, etc. Don't just load yourself up on talking points, but read about the subject. A lot of people are intimidated by reading research papers, but a great number of them are accessible and easy enough to read by the average person with the occasional need to look up some terms. Being informed allows you to engage in discussions about the topic and help spread awareness.

Some of these links should help get you started.

Many of the risks and benefits of neutering affect some breeds more than others.
For anyone with an intact bitch I highly recommend reading "Breed Variations in the Incidence of Pyometra and Mammary Tumours in Swedish Dogs"

You'll probably hear claims about how neutering reduces aggression; however, the paper "Aggression toward Familiar People, Strangers, and Conspecifics in Gonadectomized and Intact Dogs" disputes that, a relevant quote from the paper:
... there is no evidence that gonadectomy at any age alters aggressive behavior toward familiar people or dogs, and there is only a minimal increase in aggression toward strangers.

Other sources, such as kennel clubs can link to specific research that might affect one breed more than others, such as the AKC page on Rottweilers, look under the "Health" subsection for their recommendations on when to neuter as an example.

My planned excuse was 'In case I want puppies' or something, but having a moral stance might be a better excuse

Just ask if the dog is neutered. It's a reasonable question and doesn't really require an explanation. It should be a part of your decision process no matter what. If you pass on a dog, a detailed description of why isn't required. Making a snap decision based on that info will likely cause you to be judged, though. Take it in stride and make a decision later to avoid that.

Frankly, everything else is less important than the dog fitting your lifestyle and living arrangements as a platonic partner. Thinking like that will raise the chances of a successful adoption and help keep dogs out of shelters.
