New member here. I would love to engage in live chat but having tried Matrix several times, I find the app near impossible. For background, I have used just about other messaging app but am bewildered by this one. I understand the need for privacy and encryption, and though I have watched a few decent porn clips, witj my Matrix interface, I mostly see a lot of unencrypted characters (numbers and letters). Lastly, if my phone was ever seized by the authorities, is having the app enough to prove “possession” of zoo pornography?

No.
But considering it is a phone, you have dozens of copies of thumbnails of anything you have downloaded all over your internal storage.
They would not need to even open the app.

If you ever used telegram, it saves images in unencrypted form in internal storage.
If you are using android, it makes thumbnails and saves them in multiple places. IOS is going to likely be very similar.
It is a flash storage, so it has a wear leveling algorithm which spreads copies of these files across the whole chip.
It is a phone, so you are not going to completely wipe it very often.
And I am pretty sure more apps than just telegram do it this way.

Root your phone and run a photo recovery software on it. You will be unpleasantly surprised how much old porn it will dig up. And those are likely just the easily accessible deleted files, not the copies left around by the wear leveling.
Wiping flash storage is incredibly difficult.
