Joke or confession?

About 2 weeks ago, I was hanging out with a good friend of mine, and he said somethingthat has got me thinking too much. We like to make random inappropriate statements to each other, and have both made jokes about people we see on the street with their dog going home and having sex. These jokes have in the past lead to conversations about watching zoo porn, and we both have admitted to each other we find it hot to see someone fucking or getting fucked by a dog. I always just sort of figured it stopped there with him. It was just some extreme porn he watched. He has no idea how much I've done with animals, and I am not too sure he would be keen to learn what I've done with male dogs as he is not the most comfortable with male homosexuality in any form. He does not even know I am bi.
Well, over the last several times we had hung out leading up to this particular day he had been making more of those jokes than usual, and even told me about a friend of his who caught her brother fucking a cow. He commented about how he didn't understand going for an animal like a cow since "the guy has intact females, and dogs are so much sexier than a cow." All this was sort of just laughed about. As always when a taboo kink is brought up I just said "no judgment from me, just don't hurt anyone." This was also just sort of laughed off as our inappropriate humor.
That was until the day two weeks ago When we were just starting in on the off color joking, and he just sort of said "you know what, Cobweb? I have sex with animals." He used my real name as he does not know me as Cobweb, but it sort of threw me because nothing about it had the same feeling as the usual jokes. He has an intact female dog he is as close to as I have been with my past canine partners, and my mind sort of just went blank. I did not know how to respond. In all seriousness I asked "are you fucking (dogs name)? I hope she likes it" and he got quiet. The jokes shifted and zoo was not brought up again even when I tried to joke it back into conversation.
Since that day I am wondering if my friend had been trying to see if I was going to be cool with it or what. I am his closest friend, and I know the want for comradery when you are a zoo on your own. Am I reading too much into things, or did he try to actually tell me he is one of us? Just need the hive mind on this.

In my opinion, anyone who makes a statement like "Dogs are way sexier" in any context sounds like a zoo to me. Partly because if it was just a kink thing and they weren't actually into animals I wouldn't expect them to express any kind of opinion about the relative attractiveness of one animal compared to another. And then to get apparently uncomfortable when you specifically asked about him an his dog, I don't know. It would just be that the jokes got a little too personal for his tastes or it could be that you hit the nail on the head and he got cold feet. In any case if it were me, since you have that sort of back and forth going already I say keep it going. Preferably when no one else is in earshot, ask about his "girlfriend" in a joking manner and make it clear your talking about his dog. If you're bi and you don't know how cool he'll be about you and your male dog maybe make some jokes about you and female animals, that sort of things. Honestly if he straight up said "I have sex with animals" I don't think you have much to worry about because that pretty much sounds like a confession to me.

the answer is a resounding yes! No non zoo would be so in your face about it especially if they are a single male with an intact female dog. He is most likely bisexual as well and trying to feel you out. Just keep going with it I think you might be pleasantly surprised. I wish I was your bud! It would be awesome to have like minded friend.
