Is there a way to keep an intact male and female without puppies?

I wanted to get two large female dogs to maximize my chances but the second one turned out to be a male because the females died at birth, and now I'm stuck in this weird situation. I'd really like to try to at least experience a female dog once, but by the time she'll have her second heat (or even the first) the male will be sexually active too and I can't have puppies in an apartment. I'll try to somehow get through the first heat because I don't want to neuter her too soon (large dog, I don't want joint issues).

Can you guys think of anything that could help me get through the first heat and potentially later ones without accidents?

For the first one the female will have diapers and I'm planning to also put something on the male to prevent physical contact, I'll be watching them 24/7 because I work from home, they have their own indoor kennels too. If it happens I'll just neuter the female right away, or to prevent it for sure I can re-home the male for the duration of the heat but that would surely upset him and he's such a perfect dog, don't want to mess him up.

I've asked a friend and she said that during the first week the female prolly won't even let the male anywhere near her pussy because it'll be too sensitive so I'll have time to get ready to separate them and such.

I'm also wondering if handjobs would help him get used to the fact that he can't touch the bitch in heat, we'll see but I could use some tips.

i used to have a boy and a girl together. i just kept them separate at the peak of her heat. keeping him spent kinda helps to keep him calm, not by much tho. he'd ask 6+ times a day for the few days her heat was peaking. she'd ask about the same or more times. it was... exhausting part of the year.

also, are yours siblings? dogs don't really do incest if there are other options... seems to be a human thing. i know of at least one pair of brother/sister labs who were kept together with zero issues. he just wasn't interested. dunno if their owners were zoos. blood-related pairings in the breeder circles are usually "assisted breedings".

i would say nearly all dog would do that in prime heat no matter if brother/sister dad/mom...

dont spread such stuff which can lead to incest puppy for other persons!

Correct, avoided in the wild among wolves because only mommy and daddy are allowed to breed in the pack. If they want a mate of their own, they need to leave the pack.

i'll let you know when i give a fuck about your opinion.

just giving the guy another option i've seen to work with my own eyes. you know, something kinda more concrete than "uh, i'd say...". of course a vasectomy or having the space to keep them separate would be the best option. outside of mutilating one.

i stand by my suggestion that dogs don't do incest if they have other outlets. ever seen what some "breeders" fucking do to create some of the "pure bred dogs", because siblings or parent/offspring won't mate on their own?

i'm no trying to preach gospel here, just giving perspectives. you're free and very welcome to fuck off with your opinions.

Thanks for the info, the pups are unrelated and I'll do everything in my power to keep the boy spent :D
 
If you can't keep them separate, don't keep two dogs. And separate doesn't mean a fucking paper room door that they can chew through in 10 minutes.

Average ppl have no idea how much work and preparation it takes to keep two dogs separate during heat... :rolleyes:

Best solution is probably vasectomy, OSS, or both. Gives you peace of mind that nothing can happen. Otherwise, you have to be very intentional about supervising them and keeping them separate.
 
Actually the female just went into heat and the male is young enough to not be interested at all, at least yet. She has diapers on just in case, the safer PABS harness is still on the way.

Yeah, vasectomy would be nice but no vet does it in my country. I'll just go with the PABS harness once it arrives and during the next heat.
The male is a very slow and calm doggo (large breed) but even if he gets excited I really don't mind relieving him a few times a day.

I'll prolly still eventually spay her if she doesn't show much interest in sex because I don't like the idea of not being able to walk her for a month 2 times a year, she'd happily run like 20 miles a day.

What most people seem to miss is that even if he somehow knots her I can just spay the female in a few days or after the heat, it doesn't seem to complicate the procedure compared to doing it before mating. If the PABS harness breaks during her next cycle or something she still got a lot more time to grow with her hormones intact, and all that matters to me is her health, I had a dog with joint problems and it's not fun.

Well, if you are going for a spay, get an OSS. Much healthier. She will still go through heat cycles and her homonal systems will be intact. Just no uterus
