Is there a difference between pm/dm?

I always hear these 2 phrases private message vs direct message. Is there a real difference?

To me personally "PM" sounds more formal, while "DM" sounds more informal. Probably because of the phrase "Ay yo gurl, let me slid in yo DMs."

But the answer is that they mean the same thing. It's just that certain platforms have differing names for the function of directly and privately messaging another user. Some sites will call it PM, while other sites will call it DM.

This site's software also refers to it as PC, which it's assume is Private Conversation (since the button is Start Conversation).

I used to use the term DM, just because that’s what I had heard the most elsewhere. But now I typically say PM just because that’s what I see most people on here using.

There is no real difference, just language evolving over time. And maybe a difference in platform.

PM (Private Message) has forever been the standard term for sending private communication within a community, like a forum or message board. It's a message that you post to a site, but that only the recipient can read. Hence, private.

DM (Direct Message) is a term that became popular with instant messaging apps and modern social media. Where on most social media sites you can only publicly communicate through comments on content and perhaps tag people in public, a direct message is delivered privately to a person. The only functional difference is that a PM is better compared to an internal e-mail, and a DM is better compared to a private conversation on an instant messaging app (a chat, rather than an e-mail, if you will).

Practically though, they mean the exact same thing and which term people prefer is usually determined by their age and how long they've been around on the internet :)
