If dogs could talk !

It would be nice if dogs could talk, especially during those nights when I’m feeling like I need someone to talk to... other humans can be jerks. Plus it would be nice to have the dog’s input on things.
The only downside I can think of so far is that it would be hard to keep things a secret, but then again if dogs could prove they could consent and do want relationships with us then maybe we would be seen in a better light!
 
If all dogs could understand my words, I suppose my list of doggy sex partners would be a hundred times bigger. "Hey dude, meet me behind those bushes at 22:00!" Just imagine the possibilities ?. The downside would be "please don't tell a soul" ?
 
If dogs could talk, they'd be constantly out of breath, panting with every word. I wouldnt be able to take them seriously anymore ;)
 
I see no extra benefit in dogs being able to form human words. I already know their language, they learn mine really well, too and meeting in the middle has served me well all my life. I don't feel like I lack anything or want more words. Animals are understandable and coherent as they are.

But... people who have never respected animals as they are would probably benefit from them actually forming human sentences in human languages. It would require them even more mental gymnastics to claim animals don't this-and-that. They'd have to accept them as persons, finally, or invent new, more obscure hurdles to deny their personality and, heh, humanity ;)

i was wrong, it's just under 400 pages, but still large.

another good comic book that deals with the "what if" scenario regarding animals is "animosity". there are two big collections ("year one" and "year two"). i don't think it's as good now as it was when it started, but it's still pretty good and very thought-provoking.
 
Human language would require human level of intelligence which would bring everything I do not like about people with it. I do not know whether I would be zoo in such a world. :D On the other hand a portion of people currently on this website would end up behind bars for animal abuse.
