Safe from what? At least for me (in to dogs), the chance of getting an STD is basically zero, especially because my girl will be MY girl and will only do things with me.
If it is safe from public ridicule/the law, just be careful and don't get caught. If you don't tell anyone no one will find out (unless you do something with an animal in public or where people might otherwise see you).
