How Long Can She Wait

dogwoof

Lurker
When Outside of schooling I devote most of my time to my intact female dog, but the problem is I may end up being away from home and her with no contact for a week, every other week, she will still be take care of. Im just wondering how this would affect her or us sexually if we’ve already mated before and she comes to me asking for sex. I’ve seen some posts saying their dog asks for sex every day, more then once per day, or rarely outside of their heat cycle, and to not have sex 2-4 weeks after her heat cycle. What would happen to her? What should I do?

For anyone that saw my other post, yes this is all theoretical, felt like I should mention that.

No affect on sexual interests other than an increased chance of her wanting to get out and ending up pregnant. She'll probably start getting pissy and tearing things up when you leave especially when she's in heat. You are in deep shit dude cause there's also a chance she'll get separation anxiety and end up unintentionally causing self harm. There's a range of things that could happen my thoughts when ever you are gone leave her with a lady friend so she doesn't try to hit on other guys. Then again who do you have to trust is there anyone you know that you trust that knows about her special needs?

It strongly depends on the dog's temperament. She's not sure he'll be crazy. However, it is necessary to have a very good fence and someone to look after the dog, at least when it is in heat. This is true for all female dogs...

Well the only person that would be able to watch as of right now would be my mother, obvious she doesnt know about her ‘needs’ but takes care of her like a regular dog. So im guessing it would be a bad idea to leave her alone that long, but what if i’ve done this before more then once as she was growing up, would that have an effect? Another person said it depends on her temperament so ill figure that out too

Sounds like you're going to be investing In some obedience training. Leaving her with your mom might actually work as long as she's okay with having a dog around that's not fixed. She doesn't need to know details just say you prefer to keep her intact because of health reasons and moral preference.

From the sexual end I wouldn't really worry about it. Provide the best care you can and make sure you're giving her enough human interaction so she's not lonely. I presume when you're gone for extended periods there's someone else there to take care of her and provide her with company and interaction, if so I wouldn't worry about it too much. The main thing is that she not feel abandoned and that she receives consistent, quality care and is provided with enough positive interaction. Separation anxiety can develop, but there are things you can do to help reduce it.

I've been in similar situations before, in those cases I've typically picked up a housemate to ensure there's someone there when I can't be. Then the hard part tends to be finding someone who will take good care. I've been known to offer a room for next to nothing for someone who I knew would love my dogs as I do. I've done this with both other zoos and with non-zoos, the main thing is finding someone you are both comfortable with and who is trustworthy.

How would I know if she thinks I abandoned her, or how long would it take for her to think I abandoned her? Same with Separation anxiety, how long? Is it stackable? Like would it get worse and worse the more I dont see her every other week or would she get used to it quickly?

First off depending on how strong your bond is with her it could turn into a homeward bound situation if you leave for more than a few weeks without having someone there to properly care for her. As long as she has consisant company from someone you both trust she shouldn't end up getting anxiety. It doesn't take long to set in either it depends on the animal but without having the same amount of company that you give her now It wouldn't be long before she misses it and starts getting stressed a day maybe more. She might adapt but once again that depends on her personality.

Ok, thank you! One more thing, once you start mating with her, or any female dog, you cant really just stop, especially if you’ve done it more then once because she gets used to it?

They are not so sensitive to changes in sexual life. If years of regular sex suddenly stops, it is not typical for them to have a problem.

It's highly variable, I have known some dogs who are highly prone to separation anxiety and others who were completely unphased by the absence of humans until the food bowl needs filled.

I have found a remote camera to be very useful in assessing this sort of thing as some dogs will act up for only a few moments then settle in, others may react later, some not at all. It's not an easy "Do X for Y time". Sometimes it's an easy fix, but most times it is not; there are complex behaviors and genetic predisopsitions that can be at work. If separation anxiety becomes an issue, you may have to engage a behaviorist or be well on the path of learning functional behavior modification yourself. I personally encourage everyone to follow that later path at least a bit as a good foundation in behavior and operant conditioning can greatly improve communication and relieve stress and conflicts for both.
