Help, Male interested but does not thrust

Hello all,
Just hoping for some advice. I have a 2.5 year old male GSD. He shows a lot of interest, he whines and will jump up in the natural doggy position but wants me to insert for him then doesn’t thrust to knot. The few times the knot has gone in he seems to love it but does nothing to keep it there himself. He seems unsteady in that position or like he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do?! If that makes sense. He has never mated anyone/anything else. This is his only experience.

My main question is what can I do to get him to thrust on his own or bury his knot himself? Or is it just what it is and I have a boy who wants me to do the work for him? ?
Secondly, if the latter is true, is there a position that would be easier on me than bent over if I have to do all the work?
Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

A dog will actually pull on the knot. It is not the male's responsibility to keep the knot in. The female dog has a ring muscle that holds the knot. Use your hands to keep pressure on the back side of the knot.

Pressure on the knot is key. Humps usually begin when I place my hand on my dog's sheath and pinch behind the knot.

I don’t mind to hold him in. I just can’t get him to thrust to get it started.
