First dog (doberman?)

I grew up with a rott-dobie mix. He was one of the best examples of a dog that I know of. Protected the house from a thief who only left a bloody sleeve and didn't take anything. Would have been nice if he knew how to close the door during a blizzard, but 8/10 protection. He didn't allow anybody to harm me growing up and could be controlled by me with ease with light leash corrections or voice commands at a distance. He never tried to not be gentle, but sometimes didn't appreciate how much he weighed when laying on or into a person.
I usually say working breed dogs need to be kept active, and that is true. I think that they need less then most other active/working breed dogs. They can easily destroy your house and sanity if you don't give them what they need, but they seem to have less incidents compared to others. I'm not sure if it is because they are not as popular right now, or if because they are naturally relaxed. I don't remember the dog growing up being anything but calm and obedient unless a potential physical threat was near me or my sister. Then if the 'threat' persisted and wasn't told it was okay, he looked terrifying and his menacing low growl typically resolved any potential issues. I don't think he was a trained protection dog either. He just naturally protected his family. Its possibly he was a failed protection trainee though. We got him as a trained, but still very young dog.
