You only have 2 real options. Puppy route or Craigslist route. Both have their pros and cons.
You’re best and most rewarding option is gonna be the puppy route. It’s also gonna be the most expensive and most time consuming. But you get to research and choose the breed you want, raise your puppy and develop a strong relationship with him. That’s the best option if you have the money for a well bred puppy, and the patience to raise and train him.
Or, you could go with option 2, finding an adult(or puppy) on Craigslist or similar site. A lot more straightforward than the puppy route, you could try to find an intact adult dog that someone is rehoming. Depending on your area there may be more or less dogs available but any area has their share. Going this route is basically a coin toss. You could get lucky and bring him a real stud that loves you and sex, or you could bring home a dog that hates sex and may get aggressive with you if you try it. You have a better chance with males dog than with females though. This route is better if you don’t have the time or patience to raise a puppy, or you just don’t want to wait 1-2 years for a puppy to mature.
But remember, neither route is guaranteed. It’s up to the dog. You could raise a super stud from a pup or pick him up from Craigslist. Just be prepared to love and care for him if things don’t work out the way you hoped.
For my first dog, I went with the Craigslist route. I got my intact male German Shepherd about 2 years ago. I got very lucky and very unlucky with him. He’s such a good dog, really well behaved, smart, loyal. The best dog you could ask for. But he isn’t into sex at all. I don’t know if somethings wrong or if it’s just the way he is but even though he’s intact, he doesn’t care to hump, mount or knot. Sucks, but it is what it is. I got my second dog a few months ago. Decided to go the puppy route. Got a female Malamute. She’s about 4 months old now and growing fast. I’ll be honest, it sucks raising a puppy, dealing with house training and having to wait for her to grow up. But it’s worth it to wait 1 year to gain 9. I would like to get another dog soon(hopefully a male St Bernard or Newfie) and I’ll probably go the Craigslist route again. Where I am in life right now, I’m just not ready to raise another puppy. I wish I could, but it would work out a lot better for everyone if I got an adult.
Anyways, whatever you choose, love and cherish your pup no matter what happens.
