Dream scenario!

I just wanted to share because of how excited I am.

I am moving soon, so when I was looking for places I knew I needed something pretty friendly.

While I was searching for places, I ended up looking for a dog earlier than I probably should have, but I ended up finding a 2 year old mastiff who needed to be rehomed.

I contacted his current family, I drove an hour to meet all of them and I instantly fell in love 😍.

125 lbs, big boy. But he is so sweet, loves people. He purrs like a dinosaur when you rub his belly, he's super well behaved on a leash.

And the best part...

He's a hugger! He will jump up and just wrap his paws around you, tail swinging around waiting for you to love on him.

I am so excited, he's got an amazing personality, he is coming from a loving home that took great care of him, and they are letting me pick him up in a few weeks.

I have officially gotten my move in locked into my new place, so I'll be moved in, and immediately picking up my new partner in crime! (And probably giving him a bath as soon as we walk into the house lol)

Im through the moon with excitement and I wanted to share!!!

Congratulations! Hope everything goes well. Just remember that attempting to maintain the dream scenario despite evidence that things are not as they seem is a pitfall we all might succumb to if we aren't careful. Spend time getting to know who he is and what he likes - the hugs are a good start! Establish a routine and a shared communication and trust bond and go from there. Hope the dream continues but don't ignore the pinches if things are telling you to wake up!

Oh for sure, I talked with the current family for about 2 hours, just talking about his behavior and temperament, what he is and isn't used to.

I also am really familiar with mastiffs in general.

They are just hard to find in my area, unless you have thousands of dollars to spend.

I made sure to talk about his history with kids, dogs, cats, strangers. While he's fully vaccinated, I already have an appointment scheduled at the very for a full exam and work up to make sure he had everything.

I have 0 intention of doing anything with him that's romantic/sexual unless he shows any signs of it, and not until I've had him with me for at least a couple of months.

I'm also debating some of the obedience classes in my area, the ones where I go with him and a trainer walks us through it, but I do the work with him, just to be better.

I already know that the dream is going to be expensive, sometimes frustrating, and never going to be perfect, but I have wanted a mastiff for several years, and I will take all of the "bad" in a heartbeat regardless. I'm just at the point of bubbling excitement now!

Congratulations, that is really awesome! And great to see you thought things through as well. Too many people do these things on a whim .. or worse because they're horny. I don't get that vibe here though.

I'm sure the both of you will take good care of each other. 😁

Oh 100%, this has been a decision that's been in the making for more than a year, the only thing that was fast was the search and decision to get him vs taking time to find a different dog.

But it really was one of those unbelievable opportunities that came by, and after meeting him, I just knew he was the perfect fit!

Good luck! I trust you'll be an excellent caretaker and I personally hope your full dream does come true even if it takes awhile. Remember, animals can say no too.

My first comment was the default obligatory response not just for the person posting about their new companion but for anyone reading. Normally everything you mention, especially waiting those two months before accepting any advances from him just to be sure on the communication, is the best thing you can do by your canine partner. The exception, if there is one, seems to me to be you from what you have said. Not saying you should or need to but it sounds like you have done enough background work that if you guys really wanted to you could ignore the wait. I would never usually suggest that but I think you have demonstrated that you know what you are doing, what it involves and thanks to the background talking to the former owners you have enough understanding of him to just go for it if he does express early interest. The benefit is you would also know that he distinguishes sex from obedience training. Not that obedience training doesn't have a place during sex (a dog who just knotted his first ever lover and starts to drag them around the bedroom wont be hurt by a firm instruction to stay for example) but for the most part any human partner would want to be very clear in distinguishing sex and obedience training. But it is pretty clear you already know that and as far as you can verify on a forum from a few posts I would say you are the exception there as well. Sounds like you'd know when it is appropriate to maximize both you and your lover's enjoyment to use a firm direction or two and when it would risk interfering with his perception of sex as consentual rather than something done to meet your expectation and approval.

Normally I wouldn't say any of this publicly because I dont want people reading it and assuming if they just do everything you mention they are the exception as well. What is different here between you and a reader is that you demonstrated the right knowledge in a way that says you have a much more complete understanding than just what you have posted about so far. It is probably almost two months now anyway given my delay but as much as abundance of caution is a sign of responsible human partners if you know your shit and you know your companion the way it seems you do then that really is as close to the dream scenario as you can get. So in this rare, exceptional, case with the caveat that I am judging off of just a couple posts, I think you can trust your judgment and not worry about arbitrary waiting periods.

For those reading thinking they are also exceptions remember that OP also would know if he needs to wait longer than two months to ensure he is confident in the trust and communication between himself and his potential new lover. So I am saying sounds like OP can trust himself to make the right calls without resorting to rules of thumb. If my judgment on the limited evidence is right then I would even go as far as saying if OP and his companion hit it off then sex from week one might even be completely fine. The other big caveat is that OP's companion is a male dog and I assume sex is non-penetrative and or dog on human penetration. A female canine companion or any human on dog penetration definitely requires very certain levels of communication and trust. Not saying a few months without engaging sexually with a consenting female canine partner as a rule of thumb doesnt also have a week one exception. Just that it would be even rarer than OPs Dream Scenario. Every situation is different and caution is always better than letting optimism, expectation or desire cloud decision making and land yourself and your partner in harms way.

But when someone like OP shows they care, they have done everything right and they aren't rushing in to things and they know what they are talking about without just copying what they read on a forum then I say they should go for it and trust their own judgment and enjoy the companionship together. No point dreaming longer when you know you are safe to start living it for real.

I just wanted to acknowledge that there are exceptions to every rule and loosen up a bit on my perpetual buzzkill default replies of "dont think you cant or wont misread or miscommunicate and end up with one of you hurt!"

tl;dr actually OP seems to know his stuff more than most and should accept wanted advances from his new companion any time he feels it is right

I appreciate all of that, and goodness that was a longer comment then I ever expected to receive on here! Lol

I think the whole time frame thing is more of a baseline in my head then a rule of thumb, mostly because there's just time it takes for dogs and people to adjust to changes in lifestyle and environment.

Getting used to routines, behavior adjustments and everything else.

I want him happy with what people would consider "perfectly normal" in terms of lifestyle, before introducing intimacy, because I would rather know that he's a happy dog without it, and make him REALLY happy, then him be tolerant and only happy because he's fucking me.

So to me it's making sure that I can give him time, see how he does, make changes if needed, and then see where things evolve.

I don't really know how other people like to live, but I have a POV that if you have a sexual relationship with a dog you own, then it's more like having a significant other, with all of the ups and downs.

And sure casual hookups are a thing with humans and animals, but I'm not someone who would rather find a dog every week, and play a guessing game.

I would rather just have a furry four legged boyfriend sleeping in my bed each night... Potentially 2 but still lol.

Being a good pet owner though is the minimum requirement in my head though, and even when I had dogs in my life that I couldn't get physical with, I still treated them the same, lots of love and affection, constant awareness of their mood, health, stress, energy.

I guess let this stand as a reminder for anyone thinking about getting a dog, don't forget that you're taking on the responsibility of another living being, with emotions and needs
