the alpha thing in wolves (and other canines) was disproven by the same guy who came up with it in the first place. wolves don't do "alpha>beta>whatever", most packs are just extended family of sorts. also, wolves (like most animals) aren't that much into incest which is why they don't mate willy nilly within the pack.
