Does anyone have any experience owning a Boykin Spaniel?

Look at the energy standard, coat, either it is a working or show line breed that would suit you the best. Also remember a dog's temperament and energy level will not only depend on the breed but also of the quality of early socialisation, type of training (punishlent or positive) and just about this specific individual.

Saw a pic of one in an intrusive Adobe Lightroom ad, thought they look really cute
I haven't owned one but I can relay what I've heard from the dog community:
They're very sweet, fun, friendly, spunky, full of life dogs. They're great with other dogs.
However, they're one of the more challenging spaniels as they're very active and work driven. They're more motivated by the excitement of the work than they are motivated to do the work to please you. But, they're also very food motivated.
You don't need to hunt with them to keep them happy though, they can thrive in other active lifestyles. But you will need to be active, and you need to be active everyday if you want to come back home to a happy snuggle bug.
They have can have very destructive puppy phases which need a lot of effort to train, redirection, exercise, and mentally stimulate out.
You'll also need to be very careful about keeping them from swallowing things they shouldn't, it's a very common issue with the breed.
The breeder community is a bit of a mess, many either being either very byb or very snobby. They can be prone to anxiety, especially in regards to separation anxiety, but this is helped a lot through good breeding practices and early training. They're also prone to a decent chunk of health issues so, you'd want to look for a breeder that does genetic health testing and hip screening.
For more information it's always good to check with the boykin spaniel breed club of your country.
