It depended what animal I was with. With the farm animals, sheep, goats, mares it was pretty much straight to the point. It depends on various factors, but generally speaking most often with my bitches as they love it and of course if it's me who wants to initiate sex. By doing some foreplay I can observe their reaction, just to make sure that they are ready and really want to move forward. From time to time we end up having some foreplay only if they are not in the mood (same applies to mares) .

In case of my dogs it's not needed. They are almost always willing to have sex and in most cases they initiate everything. We do some foreplay but only when I want them to be even more aroused before we start anything more. It works really well in cases when I look for a longer tie or to make them a bit more hmm frisky let's say :D

When it comes to stallions, not at all. We have sex intermittently only when mares are in heat and they actively ask for it.
 
Unless my mare is deep into her heat she's always open to some good foreplay to get her excited and set the mood, proper foreplay can get her as ready and rearing to go as if she's in heat. And equine foreplay doesn't start under her tail but all over her body hitting each sensitive spot she likes before going under her tail for the final bit of foreplay before sex happens.
 
Always foreplay unless a mare is in standing heat and just flat out demanding to be bred right then and there.
