Nope, you only need to comment 10 times. Those are your 10 "messages."

Threads are topics within a section of the overall forum with the headlines. You will comment in the threads, either to the original thread post, or to comments from others in the thread. That will all contribute to your post count. Don't be confused by the word "messages" near the upper left of your profile...that really means comments and replies. (posts)

I think it's in the rules forum but it's different for different people depending on when you joined

After you make 10 comments/replies in forums, your DM button will appear. I see, as of this writing, you are 7 comments (posts) away from that. That's not many. Comments in the fun and games section do not count, nor do comments on profiles.
You'll see your post count near the upper left on your profile page where it's says "messages." You have 3.

A helpful hint: Always reply by clicking the "reply" button in the bottom right of the box.
Otherwise, people won't know to whom you're replying.
