Can Mega.nz or other clouds report me and link me to the content stored?

Hi, I have a technical privacy question. I use the Mega nz app on my iPhone to store zoo stuff on the cloud. Recently I saw a Mega file I couldn’t download because it said “this user stored Bestiality and they’re been banned and reported to the authorities.”

iPhone App Store requires me to sign in with my personally identifying Apple ID. My question is, if Mega bans me, can they then report me to Apple and identify me thru some unique app ID?

That would depend on what kind of metadata does your phone share with mega. They probably know you have an iphone since you are using their app. Whether they know your apple id I do not know. But they know you login information which probably contains an e-mail address (that might be personal depending on what you used) or possibly even your payment information if you pay them.

But they would not report you to Apple, they would report you to the police and give them the data they have about you. If that also includes you apple id, it will be easy to identify you. But if it also contains any of the other possibly personal information, your apple id will not be needed.

It definitely includes you IP address since I guess you are not connecting the app to the server through a vpn/tor. That address leads to your ISP who will do all in their power to help the police find you since they are definitely not going to stand up for you.

Do not use public clouds which explicitly forbid illegal content in their TOS for storing illegal content.
Use an encrypted offline container like VeraCrypt which you can then upload to a cloud when it is encrypted.

I do always use a VPN and a fake email address for the service. So if they can’t connect the app version to my unique iPhone ID they wouldn’t get much.
