i posted this in a little-read forum thread but thought it deserved a home:
Before you share some new clip you find, consider this:
most fund their work through public sales, private-member content; and private collectors.
Those movies are not cheap to make.
the payroll includes: model, producer, director, usually 2-3 editors, 3-4 camera people, 3-4 lighting people, a key grip, cable runners/electrician, 2-3 sound people, a vet, a doctor, a caterer, hotels for most of the crew, airfare for the people who are flying to the location where it's still legal, limo/transportation, lawyer(s), contract negotiator, translator(s), animal handler(s),
- each one of those people are not only paid for their skillset, but they are also paid to keep their mouths shut and paid enough to ensure the content is not leaked.
- the studio/site has to pay for sound stage/location, electricity, lighting equipment rental, camera payment (if smart they depreciate it during each shoot), table and chair rentals, furniture rental, various side equipment, coffee and donuts, cleaning fees after everyone is gone, cleaning fees during the shoot.
A shoot takes place over 3-5 days with multiple takes. What you see is the edited version to make it look like a seamless one-time event.
Basically, a well done film is run like tv studio.
aside from cost, why does it matter?
the people who invest money into a project, do not want to foot the bill for the everyday Joe/jane to pay once and share it twice. So the content remains available only to the investors for 1-2, even up to 5 years. Afterwards, if its in the contract, it's released for public purchases. If not, it remains private forever, or until someone leaks it.
Private collectors (less than 5 people and often just 1 person) funding the entire shoot. Models are much more willing to do these, because the investor(s) have as much reputation to lose as the model does.
in either version, the investors stand to lose a lot of money if they leak it out so everyone is very respectful of each other; and models are more willing to take that work.
the public availability, most models wont touch it, because of how many people share it for free, it kills the industry, and it increases the likelihood of friends and family finding out
