Any way to tell if a cat is a stray?

A few years ago I moved to my current place and a cat often came by to check out my trash, I started giving her food when I saw her and started trying to touch her... long story short after a lot of mistrust on both parties and a few bites we now get along great and cuddle a lot, she hangs around, disappears, stops by again, it's very rare for me not to see her daily.

First cat friend, they really are completely different from dogs.?‍

Any way to tell if she's stray? I think shes too docile to be stray, she rubs herself on me and all.

Been calling her Scare-rat (translation) but maybe she already has a name.

(I also find her to be so so sexy, but every time I touch her there she turns around and gives me the "you pervert human" stare)

You can take her to a vet to see if she's been microchipped. Beyond that, put up notices in your neighborhood and/or online of found cat to see if anyone comes forward to claim her.

They also dont live long.
That I didn't know, as for looks she looks great, fed and clean.
I'm in the outskirts of a small town, not a big city, I know stray dogs have it ok here, people feed them, their only natural enemy is cars

Actually, Owls, Dogs, larger Hawks, other cats, Foxes and humans are also on that list. Stray dogs arent common anymore in the US, although feral packs occur in some places. If your friend has lasted five years, shes not a stray.

We live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of outside cats. Here that means they have a home and a bed (usually in a garage) they sleep in but during they day the wonder around doing whatever they please.

In my personal opinion I would just be happy she keeps you in her main loop. You are essentially part of her extended family. For me that is the happiest way for a kitty to live, wild and free but with a constant warm home when needed.

I agree with @saddlebum66, strays or even outside animals can disapear for any number of reasons. Cars and hawks are the main reason here but everything listed is valid. In Nevada it was coyotes that would also be an issue.

Either way, treat her well while she is around and enjoy every moment! The kitty is living the best life possible in my opinion and I would not want to do anything to change that.

I deliberately left coyotes out, since they arent commonly seen in a lot of places. Most people dont know theyre there, except at whelping time. Here in Northern Nevada, theyre always around, and cats, stray or not, are always on the menu.

Then I guess she's not a stray, I've also previously noticed when we didn't trust each other much that she would get plants tangled in her fur and parasites in her skin, after a while she had gotten rid of them. Don't know if cats take them off by themselves, dogs don't.

BTW, her surviving five years as a stray wouldn't surprise me, she's a very bright, very clever short tailed cat, probably had some accident before and won't take much risks anymore, I remember her tail being "cut looking", now looks normal but short.

If you google paper collar lost cats that’s a good way to find out if it goes home or to another random house but cats pick their homes so maybe that you end up sharing ❤️

Not 100% if the cat is very fearful of humans it's probably a feral cat aka it's not adoptable but usually feral cats have someone who feeds them. You can also have the animal scanned for a microchip and call local shelters rescues etc and ask if someone has lost a cat that fits the cats description also post that you found a cat don't post pictures have people who inquire send photos some people will try to claim the animal is there's when it's not if they think the animals is pretty or cute or if they intent to abuse or kill it.
